Recently I watched the live birth of a giraffe. I was not a
follower of the protracted pregnancy of April, although I was aware of it. And
I do like giraffe’s, it just did not grab my interest. Yet, on the day of the
calf’s birth I happened to be online at the right moment and I gave up 5
minutes of my time to watch the little giraffe being born. This was an event
that was followed by many, for months, and viewed by millions that day, and
following the event. It was a shared collective experience that was brought up online
as well as real life conversations. It brought people together. It spurned discussions.
I think mostly it was a welcome distraction from all of the other hard things
going on locally, the political divide, the world conflicts, as well as the
personal struggles we all face.
I applaud Animal Adventure Park for sharing this experience
with everyone. Understand this is not an endorsement of or a conviction of the
idea of animals in captivity, simply an appreciation of their willingness to
share this with the world. I also applaud their marketing of this as it will
surely drive financial contributions to their organization which will help
ensure the animals that they care for are well taken care of.
As I pondered the activity surrounding this event, including
conversations, office pools, online posts and more, it reminded me of how small
yet positive things can bring us together in celebration. It doesn’t fix all
the ills that we are facing, but it does bring us closer which can make our burdens
just a little lighter. And maybe a burden made a little lighter is all the difference
we need for that day, to carry on, to continue our battles, to fight through
our struggles. Clearly we are never really alone if an event like this can pull
us together and can create smiles and happy conversations to many.
Positive things draw us together. Negative things push us
together. It’s a subtle difference, but the difference is known by the way the
event makes us feel. We need more things like this to continue to draw us
together in celebration instead of pushing us together in fear or anger.
Look for the positive and then share it. And, don’t belittle
or mock other’s simple celebrations when they share them online or in real life.
We need to celebrate, we need more wins, we need more positive energy pushed
out into the universe. We must share in small, yet positive things together, like
the birth of a giraffe, to offset the negative things in our lives. It’s a reminder
that there is hope for all of us, regardless of the struggles we face, that we
are not alone, and happiness might be a small celebration away.
